OLED Television Wallpaper Gives You a Room With a View

Imagine walking into the room of tomorrow… no need to reach for a light switch; the walls are already gently glowing with scenes of an undersea paradise. Hit the remote and one wall transforms into a floor-to-ceiling TV screen or the backdrop to the newest video game.

Sound like a dream? Engineers at Japan’s Toshiba corporation are well on the way to making it reality.

The crux of the biscuit is the wallpaper. Not just ANY wallpaper, of course, this is a specially developed material that utilizes flexible OLED (organic electroluminescence) screen technology to emit light in a controlled manner.

Anything from a featureless glow that serves as room lighting to action-packed movies, TV programs and computer games is possible. Those impressed by the newest flat screen TV wall mounts are sure to do a neck-snapping double take.

Although OLEDs are not new, their low efficiency has been a roadblock to more widespread applications. Toshiba’s answer is nanotechnology.

According to Toshiba spokesman Kaori Hiraki, “The wallpaper uses light that has been redirected by an ultra-fine grating that is fabricated by self-assembled nano particles.” It would seem that the effect might be similar to that of a Fresnel lens like those used in traffic lights, amplifying the intensity without requiring additional energy.

Toyota May Be Developing a Solar Powered Prius for Production

When Toyota introduced the Prius, it quickly became one of the most highly preferred hybrids available. However, as more and more companies developed their own hybrid vehicles, the popularity of the Prius began to slip. In an attempt the regain their dominance in the alternative energy realm, Toyota has secretly been developing a solar powered vehicle they hope will see mass production.

The news of this development originated from a Japanese Business paper called the Nikkei. According to their sources, the system will use solar panels mounted on the vehicles, as well as a solar array mounted on the owner’s home. Between the two charging systems, the vehicle should be able to take care of a daily commute without an issue.

The Prius is the most likely candidate for the addition of solar power, seeing as there are already a handful of companies that will engineer a solar array onto your Prius for extended range. There is also an aftermarket kit you can purchase that will charge the second-generation Prius enough to run a 20 mile commute.

As far as time in concerned, those same sources also let out that it will be years before any such plans are put into full swing if it does make it into production.

The leading and most progressive lighting designer in the world has not disappointed at Milan Design Week ‘09. Netherlands-based Royal Phillips Electronics introduced the world’s first interactive OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diodes) lighting concepts for professional and home use. These exciting designs respond to you, wherever you are, and take your intuitive cues very personally.

Each of Philips installations at the Milan show has a different set of features, but they’re all show-offs in one deserved way or another.  This hanging lamp, for example, boasts flat lights that respond to a wave of the hand or just your presence in a certain area.
